Jessie Needs

Please forgive me because I don't know where I saw this.... but there's a meme going around where you google "(your name) needs" and see what pops up, and I thought, "Hey, I've got nothing better to do right now than f* around on the computer for another ten minutes - I'll give this a whirl"

So here, in chronological order, is what "Jessie Needs":

Jessie needs expert legal and investigative assistance outside the State of Missouri.

Jessie needs experienced owners who have dealt with nervous or semi-feral cats before so will understand exactly what they are going home with.

Jessie needs to acknowledge what she did and take responsibility for it.

Jessie needs a sammich.

Jessie needs new handle bars for her chopper.

Jessie needs some help.

All Jessie needs is a home, leash walks and no strenuous exercise or play.

ooh, that was strangely fun.
I'm tagging Sarah M. and Melissa. Take that!

Locco for Gocco

I know that sounds strange. It's not even how you'd spell the word 'loco', or crazy, en espanol. But it is the name of a class that Paper Source used to offer here in Chicago. You know, back in the day when a Gocco machine was readily available for purchase.
Now I'm sure you all remember last fall (you have all of my posts memorized, right?) when I wrote about the plight of the discontinued Gocco. Shucks, I even signed the petition to bring it back!

Well, friends, it seems as though my prayers (and that petition) did not go unanswered. The Gocco is now being imported from Japan and sold at Paper Source, my beloved paper emporium. Of course when I heard the news, I immediately gave notice to my husband. Would the new and improved big daddy of all Gocco machines not be the very best 32nd birthday gift a gal could hope for? Indeed, my friends. Indeed.

So I urged my husband into action. I was fearful that the Gocco crazed "weirdos" (as the kind lady in the Paper Source demo calls them) would storm the stores and deplete their supply. I urged Jack to act now, as supplies were surely limited. He would have to act fast to ensure delivery by October 24th, my birthday.

And it is the result of those actions that allows me to boldly state that I am the new and extremely proud owner (yes, it came within 24 hours, folks) of the big daddy Gocco PG6 machine. Hallelujah and Amen.

a not so brief recap of adventures in Minnesota

Okay, so this is the blog equivalent of me sitting you down in my rumpus room with an RC Cola and forcing you to watch 400 slides of my family vacation. Could someone please get the lights for me?

Slide 001:
a gumball machine at Mall of America. My family loves it when I carry around my big-ass camera and take pictures of things like gumball machines.

Slide 002:
Did you know there's an entire theme park inside the Mall of America? There are roller coasters, a water ride, all the usual theme park rides. BUT INDOORS. And that's why I love it: No heat, no mosquitos. And no heat. It's not hot in there. Other than that, I'm SO over Mall of America, but the kids love it, so we go every single time we're in Minnesota. We eat at the Rainforest Cafe (yech!) and ride the rides and sometimes we visit the aquarium. There's also mini-golf, a wedding chapel (my mom used to own it but recently sold it and now owns a prom-gown shop in the mall), and a college, among other things. All in Bloomington, Minnesota!

By the way, I used to work in the mall. At multiple locations, actually. But not at the same time.

Slide 003:
Some lollipops

Slide 004:
Off to the beach. Last year, we went to the same beach on the same weekend before the 4th of July and they had the same sandcastle-building contest. Except last year, we built sand castles just for fun and left before the contest. The following week, we saw a picture in the local paper of the contest winners, who had merely added on to the castle we had left behind. My kids still talk about it.

We didn't let it happen again this year: We totally destroyed the whole thing before we left the beach.
Sweet, I know.

Slide 005:
I took Olivia for a mani and pedi:

Slide 006:
We celebrated Olivia's 7th and Jackie's 5th birthdays. They designed their own cakes. Olivia wanted a chocolate cake with chocolate frosting and sunflowers and her name in pink cursive.
Jackie wanted an orange cake with reptiles on it that said, not 'happy birthday' or 'Jackie', but rather, "I'm NICE" -so that's exactly what they got:

Slide 007:
Some croquet. I felt so...snooty. It was fun!

Slide 008:
We so absolutely exhausted this boy that he fell asleep just like this:

Slide 009:
I did some antiquing in a cute little town with my mom:

Slide 010:
And I did some embroidery:

Slide 011:
We took the kids to see a dinosaur exhibit in Rice Park in St. Paul (kind of like the famed Cows on Parade in Chicago, only...you know, Dinosaurs. In Minnesota):

Slie 012:
But the kids had to find grandma's dinosaur. I say that because my mom actually sponsored a dinosaur and it will go live in her backyard when the installation is complete. The artist added a little caterpillar on its back in remembrance of our little guy.

And of course, there's more. I took 400 pictures over the week. But you look antsy, so let's adjourn to the wet bar; I'll make you an amaretto stone sour and we can listen to some LP's.

Some Advice

If you decide to wake up early on a lovely Friday morning and pay some bills on the computer before you head out of town, don't spill coffee with cream and sugar all over your keyboard.

My computer has been rendered useless for today, and I type this from an extremely sub-par laptop, which is why I can't post any of the lovely photos I had planned to share with you.

And now, my lovelies, I'm going off on Holiday. I'll be back in a couple of weeks. I'll probably be lurking around from various remote locations, reading blogs, but just not able to post.

curiouser and curiouser

*
I got an email the other day about how you can't outsmart your own foot. Try this:
Sit where you are, right now, and start rotating your foot clockwise. Are you doing it? Okay, now draw the number six in the air with your writing hand. Did you do it, or did your foot change direction? Try it again. See? I told you. Your foot is smarter than your brain. Isn't that crazy?

***

Okay, do this:
Think of a number from 1 to 10.

Multiply that number by 9.

If the number is a two-digit number, add the numbers together.

Now subtract 5.

Determine which letter in the alphabet your number corresponds to (example a=1, b=2, c=3...)

Think of a country that starts with that letter.

Remember the last letter of the name of that country.

Think of an animal that starts with that letter.

Remember the last letter in the name of that animal.

Think of the name of a fruit that starts with that letter.

Are you thinking of a kangaroo in Denmark eating an orange?

My husband and I both tried this and got very different answers, but apparently most of the population will end up with a kangaroo in Denmark eating an orange. If you came up with something different, you must be a very imaginative and smart person.

Now read this:

Well, that's enough brain candy for now, I suppose.

*That's a Rorschach inkblot by the way, just in case, you know... you were curious.

HOLY GOD

...so this is how Olivia's been feeling! I've got it, too. I'm calling in sick for blog today.

6.06.2007

a mother's work...

...is never done.

I didn't forget about you today. But my baby girl was sick. And so we were on a strict popsicle and 7-up regiment, interrupted only by a visit to the doctor's office. Once there, we realized that my son was due for a shot that he couldn't receive last week at our doctor's visit, or the week before that at our scheduled appointment, or even the week before that at his Kindergarten physical. So both of my kids got shots today. Olivia's was elective, though; The doctor told her she'd feel much better much faster if they could just inject an antibiotic straight into her little tushie. She agreed. That's how "miserable" (her word) she felt today. And then of course we had to go to Build a Bear Workshop for their prizes. My kids always get a prize after a brave doctor's visit. They both 'built' husky dogs and they both named them Gracie.

We came home and I let the dogs out of their kennel (more like a double wide luxury suite, actually) and I realized that one of them had used it as a litter box. Lovely. I've got my eye on you, Gracie. So that was lots of fun to clean up and launder all their blankets. They have lots of blankets. I told you, they live in luxury.

Then I made dinner, which everyone except my husband refused to eat. Truth be told, I didn't eat it either. And now here we are. And I need to go play puppies with Jack.

an unfortunate beginning

Not to get too Lemony Snickett on you, but that's how summer vacation started around here. My daughter woke up with aches and pains and Lola (one of the dogs) threw up all over the carpet - I think she ate a yellow crayon or something.

Luckily, things turned out a bit better as the morning progressed (and after both kids had some chicken noodle soup, yes - for breakfast, and a can of seven up - with a straw). And I was able to cut some fabric and take pictures of some of my thrifty treasures from Mpls. No doubt said treasures will soon find their way into one of my pieces packets :

Now I'm taking both kids with me to my piano lesson. I'm crossing my fingers and praying for the best. And a little bribery never hurts either.

better

feeling a little better today.

Had some sushi last night (look how lovely they present it - and that's just take out!):
And some good strong coffee this morning:
(Although I spilled half of it on a pile of clean laundry when I was looking for some shorts for my daughter this morning. UGH!!)
Went to Olivia's school for a volunteer appreciation breakfast:
flew kites with her class:
and played in the school yard:
I can't believe the year is almost over! And my baby boy is going to be in kindergarten next year. Time goes too fast...

Work on the Sweepstakes continues. More tomorrow, I promise.

haiku

Haiku for my Minivan:

You need work
and so they fix you.
FOUR days now.

Thank you. I wrote that myself.

I'm not sure why I had that photo in my computer - I never used it for anything. But it reminds me of happier times, like when I used to drive MY OWN CAR to take the kids to school. God I love my minivan. I can hardly imagine my life without it. It's been at the dealership since Friday, when all I went in for was an oil change. Now I'm getting all sorts of fun stuff, like four new tires! What a fun expense! Here's to hoping it will be ready soon...

1.18.2007

we now return to our regularly scheduled programming

Seriously. I can hardly remember what it was like to have both kids off to school. We've had such a tough winter with the boy that he's usually home. But today, all is well, and they're both gettin' their learning on. And me? I have to tackle my office after a late night of collaging.

1.16.2007

what a day, what a day...

We're in the process (a very. long. process) of building a new house, and are now about one month from completion. Which means that I should be packing. But I can't really pack up my house because we haven't sold it yet, and nobody wants to come through a house with all the pictures taken down from the walls and boxes piled up everywhere. We just went about 9 weeks without a showing, so we started forgetting that we had to keep the house in "pristine" (mind you, we have two kids and two large-ish dogs) condition. It's obviously a relative term. How can I be expected to live like this? It's much too fussy.
We got a call that there would be a showing today at noon. Both of my kids have been sick since last Friday, and I kept them home today for one last day of recuperation. Do you know what it's like to get a house ready for showing with the kids home? Well, fine, I did it: I got the beds made, fluffed the pillows, vacuumed the floors, wiped the toothpaste out of the sink, put away laundry, corralled the dogs - you get the picture. I even got both the kids bathed and dressed and out of the house by the appointed hour. We went to the bookstore and out to lunch and came home to find a message (left at 11:56) that the appointment was re-scheduled. sh*t!!
On a bright note, while I was at the bookstore, I scooped up this beautiful book, which (I think) must've just been released. I'm so inspired to get sewing!
Before I get to that, I have to just sit here for a while and drool over this book I found in Minnesota a couple of weeks ago. Check out some of the sweet pages:
